GREEN BAY, Wis. — Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative members are encouraged by Senate Ag Chairman John Boozman’s (R-AR) release of the Agricultural Act of 2026, a discussion draft for the Senate version of the farm bill. This action begins the work needed by the Senate to advance a farm bill before the end of the current Congressional session. The House passed their version in April.
Edge is urging Senate members to take timely and bipartisan action to advance the Agricultural Act of 2026 and finalize the remaining portions of the long-awaited farm bill.
Of particular interest to Edge members are provisions to reauthorize the Dairy Indemnity Payment Program through 2031, remove the sunset date for the Dairy Forward Pricing Program, increase funding for the Dairy Business Innovation Initiatives and codify mandatory reporting of dairy product processing costs.
Edge has engaged in bipartisan conversations with both House and Senate lawmakers to ensure these important provisions, especially the permanency of the Dairy Forward Pricing Program, are included.
“We are pleased to see permanent authorization for this program included in the text. Removing the sunset date on this program has been one of our policy priorities. It is rewarding to see this come to fruition,” Fischer said. “Farmers use forward pricing to stabilize revenue for a portion of production, particularly in volatile markets where feed, labor, and energy costs are unpredictable.”
A portion of the farm bill was included in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed earlier this year. Final passage of the remaining farm bill programs as part of the Agricultural Act of 2026 will solidify important farm and food programs for five years.
“For dairy farmers, the farm bill is the backbone of federal dairy policy. It's important to work toward passing the Agricultural Act of 2026 which will give dairy farmers certainty, stability, and a workable safety net in an unusually volatile market.”
